Yahweh Roars
Sermon 1 in Series
Amos 1:1-2
[1] The words of Amos, who was among the shepherds of Tekoa, which he saw concerning Israel in the days of Uzziah king of Judah and in the days of Jeroboam the son of Joash, king of Israel, two years before the earthquake.
[2] And he said:
“The LORD roars from Zion
and utters his voice from Jerusalem;
the pastures of the shepherds mourn,
and the top of Carmel withers.”
1. What has been your exposure to Amos or the prophets or the history of Israel after Exodus? Can you “find yourself on the map” better than you could before the sermon?
2. What is prophecy and how does it function within Scripture? Why are Exodus, Deuteronomy, and Joshua so instructive for us to understand Amos?
3. What is notable about the situation into which Amos is called to speak? Where do we read of this in Scripture?
4. Onto what part of Israel’s situation will Amos aim the crosshairs of his message? What does this have to do with the first and second greatest commandments?
5. Why is the failure of the king so important? How specifically does he fail? What does it mean that Amos functions as a call back to the book?
6. What does it mean that salvation comes through judgement? What do you know about the rest of Israel’s history that bears this out?
