Sermon 4 in Series

Psalm 16

[1] Preserve me, O God, for in you I take refuge.
[2] I say to the LORD, “You are my Lord;
I have no good apart from you.”

[3] As for the saints in the land, they are the excellent ones,
in whom is all my delight.

[4] The sorrows of those who run after another god shall multiply;
their drink offerings of blood I will not pour out
or take their names on my lips.

[5] The LORD is my chosen portion and my cup;
you hold my lot.
[6] The lines have fallen for me in pleasant places;
indeed, I have a beautiful inheritance.

[7] I bless the LORD who gives me counsel;
in the night also my heart instructs me.
[8] I have set the LORD always before me;
because he is at my right hand, I shall not be shaken.

[9] Therefore my heart is glad, and my whole being rejoices;
my flesh also dwells secure.
[10] For you will not abandon my soul to Sheol,
or let your holy one see corruption.

[11] You make known to me the path of life;
in your presence there is fullness of joy;
at your right hand are pleasures forevermore.

DEEP SHEET: Sermon Study Questions
1.   Why do we need to be careful “not to run too quickly” to Jesus from the Old Testament? What could be the unfortunate results of doing this?
2.   How is David’s posture before God characterized by humble dependence in vv.1-2? How can you grow in this posture?
3.   What does it mean that your posture towards others should be in line with your posture towards God? How does David demonstrate this in vv.3-4 and how does it align with elements of Psalm 1?
4.   How is vv.5-6 colored with priestly language? What does it mean that for those in Christ, God is our portion?
5.   Why does the allegiance demonstrated in vv.1-8 leave us with an ache, and how do vv.9-11 satisfy this ache?
6.   What do Peter (Acts 2:24-26) and Paul (Acts 13:35-37) have to say about vv.8-11? How is this fulfilled in Christ and how does that inform our understanding of the whole Psalm?
7.   Consider the final exhortation of the importance of Christ’s resurrection and read 1 Corinthians 15:12-28 if you wish. Have you ever found yourself undervaluing the importance of the resurrection? Personally, what hope does it give you to know that Christ is the resurrected man?
