Sermon 1 in Series

Psalm 1

[1] Blessed is the man
who walks not in the counsel of the wicked,
nor stands in the way of sinners,
nor sits in the seat of scoffers;
[2] but his delight is in the law of the LORD,
and on his law he meditates day and night.

[3] He is like a tree
planted by streams of water
that yields its fruit in its season,
and its leaf does not wither.
In all that he does, he prospers.
[4] The wicked are not so,
but are like chaff that the wind drives away.

[5] Therefore the wicked will not stand in the judgment,
nor sinners in the congregation of the righteous;
[6] for the LORD knows the way of the righteous,
but the way of the wicked will perish.

DEEP SHEET: Sermon Study Questions
1.
 How have you typically approached the Psalms in the past? What does it mean to approach the Psalms as doctrine and as Scripture?
2.   Why is the contrast in vv.1-2 between the wise and the foolish? How does this contrast forge the importance of God’s Word in your mind?
3.   What does it mean to delight in the instruction of God? What practices can you cultivate to “meditate on it day and night?”
4.   What ways do vv.1-2 point us to a representative Blessed Man? What might this have to do with Deuteronomy 17:14-20?
5.   What do we learn from the images of the tree and chaff? How can these images make you sober minded about the deception of foolishness?
6.   How does 2:12 give the roadmap for how to pursue righteousness and the Righteous One? How does seeing Christ as the Blessed Man lead us to a gospel-centered response to his Psalm?
